Convert Old Films to Digital

September 5th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Anybody has his or her own classic movie (or movies) favorite. For years, a lot of people may have been collecting the movies that they love and have been watching them every now and then if the urge of reminiscing comes. Movies, needless to say, are part of everyone’s lives. Even the most anti-social type of person has his or her own movie favorite.

The same with movies, a lot of people also have their own collection of home-made videos that they have made and collected for years ever since taking videos has been invented. From the the VHS, VHS-C, SVHS, Hi8, regular, even Betamax, as long as you can use it to store precious memories, everybody has it.

However, as times is changing, so is technology. As technology changes, new equipment become more efficient and handy. The same applies for the videos that we have and the kind of storing that we use. Nowadays, digital technology is the hype, not because it is the trend but because it answers people’s problems with regards and not limited to memory space, accessibility, storage, durability and quality enhancement. With these people are now leaning to converting their old recordings to digital.

Most of the videos that we have in our storage are in the VHS format – your aunt’s wedding, Jane’s birthday, and even your first slumber party! Converting VHS files to DVD can be done in a lot of ways. Your method of choice would strongly depend on the time you need for conversion (you might want to use it a day or two from now) and whether or not you might still want to edit it (add some features and stuffs).

If you do not have much time to do the conversion and you do not want want to be bothered by a lot of intricacies, just connect your VHS Video Camera Recorder to a DVD recorder and create a copy of the video in real time. The catch for this efficient and fast-paced conversion is that it does not give you much room to edit the video.

Some people use an analog-to-DV-converter. Among the methods, this consumes the most time, in as much as long hours of work for an hour length of video. However, even if it takes up a lot of time, it also gives you a lot of flexibility in editing the video. So, you can edit no matter how you want it to look like.

Another option and which most people usually use is seeking the help of professionals to convert VHS to digital. The time allotted for this would still depend on the method that the person you are going to hire is using. However, what makes this option really enticing is, as far as service-oriented businesses are concerned, you do not have to put effort on doing the converting AND you are assured that you are going to have a good quality conversion (if not, as a paying customer, you can always ask to redo it until you are satisfied).

Brandon Barchus, an attorney, knows how important efficient and quality safekeeping is when it comes to photos, videos and documents. He has helped companies sort out legal documents in a more efficient way by converting these to digital file format This has cut the whole finding and organizing time-consuming process into a matter of minutes. Aside from legal documents, his digital conversion also includes photographs and videos.

Die Sinfonien

September 3rd, 2010

: SINFONIEN 1-10 GA Die Sinfonien

Window Blinds – Art, Aptitude, Or Zen?

August 31st, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Imagine waking up in the luxury of your home after an exquisite night of revelry. At first you simply lay there, in that peaceful bit of slumber somewhere between sleep and awareness. Next, you stretch slowly, allowing feeling back into your extremities. Sitting up, your eyes stilled closed, a sense of dread creeps into you from the recesses of your mind. You’re late for work. With a jarring dose of reality setting in, your eyes fly open only to be immediately assaulted by the suns glowing rays streaming in from your window. You jump out of bed stepping on your shoes that were hastily disregarded just a few short hours ago. Cursing in vain you stumble to the window to shut the curtains. Your eyes starting to finally adjust to the intense burning light that your sense cannot seem to keep out, you see your 90 year old neighbor in her garden staring at you with an immensely profound look of shock and awe. And why IS your neighbor always there when you come to the window anyways. Hrmm that’s for another day. Flushing with embarrassment, you practically rip the curtains off their rods in a silly attempt to shut out that pervasive stare. Instead of closing like good curtains always do, they decide to attack, and descend upon you like an alien straight out of a horror film. Sighing heavily, you think to yourself, “If only I had window blinds”. Bummer.

The previous little tidbit is based on a true story. Well, at least I am fairly certain someone somewhere in the world has actually experienced this a time or three or it would not be in comedy movies so often. At any rate, the previous tale could have been avoided with elegantly simple window blinds. Window blinds come in a massive array of colors, sizes, styles, and yes even material, but before I go over some of these features, let us talk about the reasons for purchasing blinds to begin with. Obviously from the story above, window blinds can be utilized for privacy from those pesky, always gardening, elderly neighbors with the prowess of your average TV psychic to “know” when you are in there. Privacy concerns aside, there are other even more practical reasons for owning window blinds. Bills, that is to say, the dreaded “B” word. More specifically, your cooling and heating bills. Windows by themselves don’t do very well at keeping the heat in or out of your home. They need additional support in that department. By adding window blinds, whether they are your normal run of the mill, or more decorative like vertical blinds, they add an extra layer of insulation to your windows. This may not seem like much at first, but when you add a heavy drape behind those, and then some nice curtains, the savings on your energy bill can be significant. This style setup can also assist with noisy neighborhoods by attenuating down some of the sounds that permeate into your home and some of the lower decibel noises can be shut out completely. Now, let’s move on to the good stuff.

When it comes to choosing window blinds, the possibilities are far from limited. All you will need is a measuring tape, a pen with paper, and a good imagination. Try to picture just how you would like to make your home look and feel and write it down. If you can’t come up with anything, look at homes in home and garden type magazines or on home improvement TV shows. Once you have some ideas, get your window measurements and then it’s time to do some good old fashion window (blinds) shopping. Pun fully intended.

There are many websites you can select from just to get a general idea of what’s available, but they are easily found with your favorite search engine. Just type in “window blinds” or “vertical blinds”, hit enter and you are good to go. Now for some variety in vertical blinds. If there is a specific color you just absolutely love, chances are you can get your window blinds in it. If you have an oddly shaped window (Like those old antique stop sign shaped windows) you can get vertical blinds and cut to fit or even have them custom built just for you! There are window blinds that can be opened with a wand that you simply push or pull from one side to the other, and there are some that you can open dramatically from the center with a simple chain. For those of you more economically oriented people, time is money, and vertical blinds almost never get dusty. Sure a wind storm can blow sand all over them, but when it’s over take a light rag to them and in just a minute or so, voila, nice and shiny again. Those of you that enjoy, ahem, “celebrations” might even considered fabric blinds that can add whatever flare or atmosphere of your choice.

All in all, vertical blinds are very economical, practical, durable, and stylish. Vertical blinds, additionally, can add to your home, protect your privacy (especially from gardeners), reduce your heating and cooling costs, and just look great.

P.S. No curtains were harmed in the making of this article.

Wake Up to an iPod Alarm Clock

August 30th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Waking up to an iPod alarm clock doesn’t get any easier – you choose the music, you choose the time! Compared to a traditional clock radio, the iPod alarm clock is a breath of fresh air with clear, crisp sounds that you have pre-selected.

Rather than waking up to the sound of a hyped-up DJ, the boring news, or that song that just makes you want to scream, you can select the music and songs that will help start your day on the right foot. So, if you still own that old alarm clock radio, don’t you think it’s about time you stepped up and entered the 21st Century with an iPod alarm clock?

Why Use an iPod Alarm Clock

The iPod alarm clock is not an iPod itself, but an alarm clock that is made specifically to work with your mini music player. Most of these clocks are built with two or more speakers to provide much better sound reproduction than can be attained with a regular alarm clock radio. You can expect superior sound with richer midrange and full bass sound in a desktop model.

The Benefits of Waking Up on Your Own Terms

The beauty of these alarm clocks is that you can program your favorite morning tunes to play at a certain time to nudge you awake from your deep slumber. To help, these clocks also have the classic alarm buzzer in case you need a little extra incentive to get up in the morning. Of course, if you are not quite ready to face the day’s challenges, it has a snooze button that let’s you finish that dream that was just getting exciting!

Another benefit is that the iPod alarm clock is not restricted to just your iPod tunes, but incorporates an AM/FM radio in case you want to catch your favorite morning DJ show. The radio station will also play through the same sound system as the iPod and provide you with outstanding quality sound.

The iPod clock has an automatic reset feature that sets the alarm, and wake up music, to the same time every day until changed. So, if waking to a particular favorite tune and set time every day is good for you, this clock can make it happen. If you finally get bored of the same old music, changing the setting is as easy as a click of a button.

This is truly one of the coolest clocks for waking you in the morning that is available today. The iPod alarm clock combines the unruly task of waking you each day with the high quality sound of your favorite songs. If you need to be up and out the door by a certain time every morning, this alarm clock is the only way to do it!

Sleeper Sofa

August 23rd, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Whether expecting guests or hosting a kid’s slumber party, you can rely on a sleeper sofa to give you extra sleeping space. These sofas can turn a living room, den, game room, or home office into a guest room in a jiffy. A simple purchase can greatly increase the efficiency and usefulness of any room in your house.

Sleeper love seats offer single beds while taking less space. These can be tucked into children’s rooms for their sleep-over company. Generally full-sized sofas offer full-sized beds, but the sofas themselves may vary in length or seating room. It is possible to get queen-sized beds in some sleepers.

You don’t have to cheat on style when choosing sleepers. These come in many of the same patterns and styles of regular sofas. Florals and other formal designs fit neatly into a living room, hiding your extra bed in plain sight. Modern designs fit into contemporary decor without hinting at its other modern feature, the pull-out bed. Plaids, tweeds and solids are standard-bearers since they are often found in dens and gamerooms, both common areas for hide-a-beds.

Finding sleeper furniture has become much easier with the internet. You should be able to research your purchase by analyzing the sizes, styles and colors ahead of a visit to the store. Consider the fabric as you would for any sofa purchase. If you have children, you may want a pattern that won’t show dirt or can be easily cleaned. If your visitors will be the grandchildren, the same logic applies.

When you measure the area for a sleeper chair or sofa, keep in mind that you will need to be able to open it to its full size. Be sure to check for its exact size specifications before purchasing a sleeper sofa.

Ways to Help Your Child Fight Childhood Obesity

August 22nd, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Halloween, slumber parties, birthdays — sometimes, it seems like childhood is one big food fest. It is difficult to deprive your child with special delicacies and delights when all her friends are having a grand feast.

However, this simple condition can bring about more trouble than you can think of. Treating your child occasionally may be good, but giving them the chance to devour every sweets and treats that they want could mean one big problem — childhood obesity.

In some instances, some people claim that genetics can play a major part in childhood obesity. It does, but not as big as the role that parents do. It is a falsehood that genetic materials induce a child to be heavy at an early age.

For the greater part of the population, genetic materials may establish the lower maximum values of people’s weight, but people themselves establish the higher maximum values by their food choices. In addition, since most kids cannot simply set the limits and choose the food that they need to eat, it is the duty of the parents to set the limits.

You do not know how to do it? Here are some tips that will help you keep track of your child’s food and eating regimen and help him fight childhood obesity.

1. Happy Halloween!

As the only festival dedicated almost completely to overeating on “sugar-laden treats,” Halloween holds an extraordinary place in hell for most parents dealing with childhood obesity.

This can understandably be a very tough time for your child to get through, but you can make it easier. Try focusing on the real spirit of the season and make a special haunted house for the kids, or let them have a “spooktacular” party with ghost stories, rubber spiders, and the old “spaghetti intestines and grape eyeballs” game.

For younger kids, a costume party with pumpkin painting and other activities is always fun. The important thing is that you shun away your kinds from any signs of sugary sweets.

2. Overnight trips

The first solo sleepover can be nerve-wracking for both you and the host parents. Kids old enough for slumber parties and overnight trips are typically at least starting to manage some of their own food and diet regimen, which helps.

Spend some time with the parents in advance of the event to give them a briefing on what your child might potentially need, and make yourself available via phone for any questions they might have.

Provide them with healthy snacks that they can eat and give them nutritious to cook.

3. Calorie-conscious kiddos

It is important to teach your child about the kinds of foods that they are expected to eat. Splurge some time teaching your child the comparative calorie substance. That will make your child make better food choices.

It is better to teach them early how to read food labels to help boost their food awareness.

4. Snack on the right foods

Children are very vulnerable to snacks; hence, it would be difficult to remove them. The only best way to prevent childhood obesity is to allow them to snack on the right foods. Give them some apples instead of a bar of chocolates.

Keep in mind that eating is a habit. If your children’s eating regimen has been accustomed to healthy eating from the very start, they will grow healthy and strong.

Indeed, fighting childhood obesity is not a problem. It is just in the manner parents teach their children the right stuffs to eat.

Characters – How to Make Your Reader Love Your Villain

August 21st, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Billy picked up the kitten and stroked the soft fur. He gently held the kitten against his chest and felt the delicate purring vibrate through his leather jacket. The sun drifted across the sky and still Billy stood, leaning against a fence post, stroking the kitten. The small fluff of calico fur had long since drifted off into slumber land.

Billy had no place to go, but the rickety shell of a home he’d managed to maintain under the edge of the rough side of Bartle’s Highway. The overpass half crossed the roof of his home, daring traffic to topple over and demolish all that was left of the home his father had built during the remnant years of the Dust Bowl Days of the Great Depression.

So, what is it about Billy that you like?

  • He shows a tender spirit to kittens.
  • He’s comfortable petting a kitten for hours.
  • He has depth of character – he’s maintained a home.
  • He has history – his father built the house.
  • He came from somewhere real – the dust bowl days of the great depression.
  • What gives Billy these characteristics?

He’s a vulnerable person. You don’t see him as a beast, although he may well be, later in the story. At this moment you see him as a tender, caring person.

In the case of a story that starts amid the reality of bloody gore and havoc, your villain is rarely mentioned. The villain may be described as a heartless, blood thirsty psychopath, but you won’t see the heart of your villain there. His heart will be introduced later in the story, in a way that allows you to see the vulnerable, tender side of him that you can love.

As writers, we often get caught up in the craft of writing the story and forget to investigate our characters and find out what makes them behave in the manner they do. Before we can create a monster, we must first realize that every mother loves her child. Every one of us has a good spirit, somewhere inside that must be allowed to escape into the mind of our reader.

Do you need more information about creating diverse characterizations for the stories you like to write?

Jan Verhoeff at http://acewriters.com offers writer tips that help you create characters that live well in your story settings and plots that bring your characters to life. Stop by and read some of the many articles on writing at ACE Writers.

Five Keys for Dealing with the Evil of Negative Self-talk

August 18th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Have you ever heard a child say words like-

“I’m dumb”

“I’m stupid”

“I’m just not good enough”

“I hate myself”

“I wish I wasn’t born”

These are all examples of negative self-talk, one of the most destructive habits that a child (or an adult for that matter) can have. Unfortunately this is all too common amongst children today. In just about every classroom teachers will be able to identify children who put themselves down, and typically the comments they make will be totally out of all proportion to the reality of any situation they may be facing.

Negative self-talk is much worse than many other bad habits (like biting fingernails) that people develop, because it attacks their own identity, and invariably leads to problems such as:

* low self-esteem;

* unhappiness;

* inability to make friends, and

* poor performance in school.

If your child has been engaged in negative self-talk, you need to act NOW. If it has just started you need to nip the problem in the bud, NOW. If it has been going on for some time, you need to act NOW to prevent it from becoming an entrenched habit.

Here are some steps that you can take to help your child:

1. Let your child know regularly that he or she is loved. Show this love in words and in actions.

2. Look for opportunities to praise your child for achievements or positive behaviors. Be real in your comments, but not flattering – children are experts at detecting insincerity!

3. Look for opportunities to praise your child when talking to others. This is especially effective if you are talking to a friend and your child is in an adjacent room and in earshot but is not a part of the conversation.

4. Find a time when your child is in a good mood, and give some instruction on how and why you would like them to stop the negative self-talk. Discuss together some appropriate responses to the incidents that have tended to lead to this problem. Get an agreement on the right way to respond!

5. If the negative talk starts, kindly but firmly put a stop to it straight away. Remind your child of the agreement you made together.

The aim is for children to have a positive and healthy self-image but without an inflated ego. If you suspect the problems your child has are deep seated and not responding to your efforts, it is recommended that you seek professional advice from a qualified psychologist or family counselor.
